Dual Citizenship
The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Riyadh may provide general guidance to Sri Lankan nationals on applications relating to the resumption or retention of Sri Lankan citizenship under the Citizenship Act of Sri Lanka. The final decision on dual citizenship applications is made by the Department of Immigration and Emigration of Sri Lanka.
Important Notice for Applicants in Saudi Arabia
Applicants residing in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia should note that the Embassy can assist only with matters falling within the Sri Lankan dual citizenship process. Saudi Arabia does not currently provide a dual citizenship or dual residency processing pathway through this Embassy.
Any question relating to Saudi nationality, Saudi residency status, or the recognition of another nationality in Saudi Arabia must be clarified directly with the competent Saudi authorities. Applicants are advised not to assume that approval of Sri Lankan dual citizenship will create, extend, or alter any Saudi residency, iqama, visa, or nationality entitlement.
General Sri Lankan Dual Citizenship Categories
Under the Sri Lankan process, dual citizenship generally applies under the following categories:
- Resumption: for a person whose Sri Lankan citizenship has ceased due to obtaining citizenship of another country and who wishes to resume Sri Lankan citizenship.
- Retention: for a Sri Lankan citizen who intends to obtain citizenship of another country while retaining Sri Lankan citizenship.
Applicant Responsibility
Applicants must ensure that all information and supporting documents are complete, accurate, and consistent. Name differences between passports, birth certificates, previous Sri Lankan documents, and foreign documents may require correction or additional evidence before an application can proceed.
