Regarding: Obtaining Dual citizenship under Section 19(2)
Mandatory Compliance Checklist
☐ Sri Lankan Passport
- Obtain and cancel the valid Sri Lankan passport, if it has not already been handed over to the authorities.
☐ Acknowledgement of NIC Invalidation
- Acknowledge that the existing Sri Lankan National Identity Card (NIC) becomes invalid from the date of obtaining foreign citizenship.
☐ Dual Citizenship Payment Proof
- Upload proof of payment for Dual Citizenship:
- USD 2,000 or USD 500, as applicable.
- Dual Citizenship status becomes effective from the date of payment.
☐ New National Identity Card Requirement
- Apply for a new Sri Lankan National Identity Card, as the previous NIC is deemed invalid.
☐ NIC Application Timeline
- Submit the application for a new NIC to the Department for Registration of Persons
within 06 months from the date of issuing the Dual Citizenship Certificate.
☐ Late NIC Application – Penalty Notice
- Be informed that failure to apply within the prescribed period will result in:
- A fine of LKR 2,500.00
- Liability under the Registration of Persons Act, No. 32 of 1968
☐ Name Consistency Verification
Submit the amended Birth Certificate before applying for the new NIC
If the name on the Dual Citizenship Certificate differs from the Birth Certificate:
Amend the Birth Certificate accordingly
