About us

Who we are and what we do

The functions of the embassy derive from the deep-rooted relations that exist between Sri Lanka and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, for several centuries. These functions primarily to promote Sri Lanka’s interests in the Kingdom have been reshaped in parallel to the ongoing changes that are taking place in the Kingdom in political, economic, and social spheres. Saudi Arabia is a main destination for foreign employment from Sri Lanka, contributing to nearly 20 percent of the total foreign remittances to Sri Lanka. Therefore, our key focus is serving the large number of Sri Lankan expatriates who work and live across the Kingdom.

The Embassy in Riyadh and the Consulate General Office in Jeddah supplemented by periodic mobile consular visits to other areas of the Kingdom, continue to serve the Sri Lankan community spread across far and wide despite significant hardships. The Consulate General Office in Jeddah plays a significant role in facilitating and coordinating Hajj and Umra pilgrims from Sri Lanka, in addition to its responsibilities as a foreign Mission.

His Excellency the Ambassador is the Patron of the three Sri Lankan Community Schools presently in operation in Riyadh, Jeddah, and Dammam, providing educational services to around 2000 Sri Lankan students studying in the three educational institutions. Assisting the schools in integrating with Sri Lankan syllabus and examinations and helping the continuity is one other task the embassy has undertaken in the recent past.

Fostering Sri Lankan culture and values among the Sri Lankans is another function of the embassy. This is done in coordination with the active participation of community members. The embassy is also the venue for Daham Pasal, Aranery, and Sunday School, providing religious education to Buddist, Hindu, and Christian children respectively.
